World Champions - but will we take the lessons?

Back to Overview

What an outstanding tournament! The ABs are world rugby champions again and all is good in NZ. The sun is rising each day to smiles across the nation and we all feel like the natural order will thankfully continue. I have loved watching the journey of the team that began after the 2007 RWC Quarterfinal loss to France in Cardiff. There has been a quiet transformation from then until now and winning in 2015 compared to 2011 is even sweeter again. I reflected on this while hearing Steve Hansen’s comments at the after-final press conference - “we are just ordinary people who can play rugby reasonably well” in his normal kiwi understated way!

What the ABs showed, and verbalised, is that anyone with a strong goal, a plan and the desire to do what it takes can achieve what is really important to them, regardless of the goal. There are certain things you need to have in place, and do, and the results tend to come. Richie McCaw said in the same press conference “We expected to come and play our best, and if a team was better than us on that day well so be it. But we knew that if we did that we gave ourselves a pretty good chance….we are just satisfied that we got those pieces of the puzzle right and achieved what we were after.” Well said Richie!

What concerns me is that we as a nation, as farmers and as people, will miss that message and see the ABs as amazing superheroes who won the RWC. It concerns me that we wont take that lesson that anyone can achieve what they really want, if they want it badly enough. It concerns me that we will let our negative excuses rule our minds instead of our positive reasons. What I am saying is that sheep and beef farmers need to take what they saw and heard, and work out how they can bring those concepts into their lives and businesses. We all have the seeds of greatness in us, in our own way for our own goals. The ABs just showed us the way. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us!
